ANCESTRAL WINTER MIGRATION SOUTH IS WELL UNDERWAY:
Among the one hundred or so bird species on the Partners in FlightU.S. Special Watch List are the following hummingbirds: Rufous, Allen’s, Costa’s and Calliope.  Audubon’s list shows Buff-bellied and White-eared as well. Are we concerned yet? Have you forgotten Polar bears are now reported drowning in attempts to reach disappearing ice floes??

The well known Hummer/Bird Study Group, of Alabama, will be holding its Fall Banding
Session at Fort Morgan, Ala., along Gulf Shores, headed by Directors Bob and Martha Sargent and a veteran, all-volunteer crew, beginning October 7th, 2006. The Session is planning on closing on October 20th, subject to conditions. (Alabama Gulf Bird Banding Pre Hurricanes) The site will be open to the public, but be reminded that the weekend of the 12-15th will be Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, and lodging can be difficult.  You may or may not have to pay a small fee to enter the Fort, but past the toll shack, there is no charge to visit the banding station, on your right.  A rare privilege in an important designated birding area threatened by developers.

Texas, of course, is hosting, too.

God speed.
